B.S. Desai’s vibrant and soulful oils and acrylics on canvas communicate the transcendent qualities of nature and yoga through the language of form and colour. Interested in the parallels between nature, art and life, Desai likens the universe’s ‘indefinite’ state of change through the eternal cycles of birth and death to art and the human experience. His works have an ephemeral quality to them, with a palpable sense of movement, growth and change apparent in each canvas.

Art critic H.A. Anil Kumar describes Desai’s works as an “attempt to capture our notion about infinity with finite apparatus – the painterliness. In due process what he addresses is in itself the result.”

B.S. Desai lives in Hassan, Karnataka where he teaches art at a pre-university level. His works are in private collections across India, England, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, UAE, Austria and Muscat.

B.S Desai was born in 1965 in Bagewdai Taluk, Chiraladinni, Bijapur District. He has completed Master of Visual Art and Art Master Govt. Diploma. His parents were really encouraging during his childhood. His father was a driver in a Governement agency, while his mother would knit to support him. He started painting when he was 5-6 years old. Mr.Desai’s paintings are mostly inspired by Mother Nature and Yoga.

Mr.Desai is one of the prominent artist’s in Karnataka today and had done more than 75 group shows, 10 solo shows and 30 art camps in India. He has held various positions in both “Karnataka Bala Vikasa Academy” and “Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy”. He has also won many State and National Awards.

B.S. Desai’s work may be called the landscape of his soul. But this does not imply that the artist is sentimental. His paintings have a definite impression of India’s deeper personality. The range of his colours are vivid yet sober they express a particular chasteness which few artists achieve. The strokes of his brush highlight mystical intensity. His figurations are not abstract but harmonious. This enables the compositions to exist unassumingly in their individual states.The temperament of the compositions is complimentary to the overall mood, the qualities being enriched by psychological or spiritual elements. His art is essentially an expression of faith strongly tinged with filial values.

Reverence & humility are palpable, as also a hesitance that betokens good breeding & inner culture. The artist has the skills to depict what he really likes to paint, he has the tact not to shout out aloud in garish colouration. His brushwork is not brash. The artist is a modern painter who paints from deep feelings & his own truth in life.
